Mom, Why Are You NOT a Rapper?

February 1, 2019

[Episode 68] Growing up I was always told that I could be anything that I wanted to be – and I believed that… but, as I got older, things changed and I began to think that success meant chasing a specific career… today we talk about imposter syndrome, setting intentional goals, and determining our OWN future… and I will decide whether I am interested in pursuing a career as a rap star!

The Notes

Two weeks ago, while playing our favorite date night game on the Amazon Alexa, my daughter caught me channeling my inner Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopez and busting out the Waterfalls rap.

She startled me when she asked me, “Why aren't you a rapper?”

And my first response – in typical Meg fashion – was sarcasm. But, my kids believe 100% that you just CHOOSE whatever you want to be – which makes sense… that IS what I am teaching them with my entrepreneurial lessons.

It makes me wonder where we'd all be if we TRULY believed that we could be ANYTHING we wanted to be.

Imposter syndrome plays a role – just because someone has not acknowledged your skills, does not mean that you are not skilled.

But, choice is also another element.

It's okay to be super passionate about something and choose NOT to monetize it. Ultimately it's a choice we can make – what we want to pursue as a career and what we want to just do for fun.

I hope though, that you (and my kids) never believe that you are lacking the talents to be whatever they want to be – because you CAN do anything you put your mind to!
