The Notes
- A lot of parents turn to Monique when they find themselves at their “wits end” because their teens have fallen off track. Monique helps her clients/students improve their grades, identify their passions, and achieve educational, personal, and entrepreneurial goals. Topics she frequently touches on include: study skills, confidence, communication, money management, and other life skills. When our kids are balanced, we as parents are less stressed and are able to be more successful and inspired.
“It’s a beautiful thing, when you can work together as a family for everybody to reach their goals.” ~ Monique Parker
- As adults, we often invest in our own professional development, and we should also be investing in training and development for our children. Monique’s sweet spot is working with kids in highschool and into their early 20s.
- When kids are in highschool, they have a guidance counselor, and then if/when they go to college they have an advisor… and Monique’s services bridge the gap there – she provides a service that can help in highschool and right through college-aged. This provides both consistency and a voice (other than the parents) guiding the child through the transition to adulthood.
- We discuss the importance of education, but not necessarily a college education. Monique highly values learning and encourages all entrepreneurs to attain certifications in their areas of expertise when at all possible. College is not the right path for everyone, but everyone should be in a state of constant learning.
“Find your path, find it early, and shine brightly” ~ Monique Parker
- We discussed why children need an adult – other than a parent – supporting the child through life – and especially during the teen/early adult years when kids are going through a big transition away from high school. Even with the availability of guidance counselors, it’s valuable to have a coach work with kids because coaches, like Monique, are more focused on a holistic approach and really diving to the root of the issues, and they can provide consistency during this time of transition.
- Monique discusses what entrepreneurial parents can do to prepare your kids for the real world. She highly recommends honest and open communication, as well as grace. This is something I connect to my own personal situation, in which my 10-year-old has started a business, but on a different level from a business founded by an adult. We can provide them with knowledge and opportunities without pushing them to grow up too soon.
“Step out of the box, and realize that it’s okay to have alternative education” ~ Monique Parker
- Approaching education from a holistic perspective is essential to helping our children grow. We have the opportunity now to help our children be successful as an adult. Like Frederick Douglass said – it’s easier to raise a child than to fix a broken man. So, don’t wait until the child is 18… while 18 is not “too late:” it can be much more effective to start ASAP.
