Website tracking is very important to ensure that you know your numbers. If you want to collect data, the first thing you need is website tracking. In fact, I challenge you to get it up right now. It’s honestly not that difficult to get basic analytics installed on your website. Not if you use Google Analytics. It’s free, and they provide excellent directions so that you can do it. If you have a self-hosted WordPress site, there are also plugins that can help you. It takes a few days for Google to get started tracking and collecting good data.
Even if your web host includes some form of tracking for you, that’s not really enough. Using Google Analytics can barely be beat at this point. Sure, you can use some more expensive forms of tracking, but they probably use Google as their base anyway. You might as well use Google Analytics too. After all, it is the most used search engine so they’re going to be much better prepared and sure about what they tell you to do and what numbers they let you track.
It’s simple to install Google Analytics on your website, it’s just three steps:
Step #1: Create a Google Account or Use the One You Already Have
Really consider this because once you set that up, you’re not going to want to change it. The smart thing to do is to create a Google Account just for this website. The reason is that if you ever want to sell the business, it’s easier if you can sell everything together and leave the analytics to someone else. You can’t do that if you’re using your personal Gmail account.
Step #2: Set Up Your Google Analytics
After you’re signed into your Google Account, go to Google Analytics: https://www.google.com/analytics. You’ll need to give the account a name, name your website, provide the URL, choose an industry category, and include the time zone that you want the report to be for. Go through the steps to add your website that you want to track. Then you’ll get your tracking ID. Be sure to agree to the terms of service. Notice where and how you can grab the tracking code.
Step#3: Install the Tracking Code
Google Analytics uses a code to collect the information on many different metrics. This code needs to be installed on every single page you want to be tracked on your site. It’s usually copied and pasted into the header or the footer of your site where the code is. If you have a self-hosted WordPress site, you can install a plugin to help.
