Brendan Alan Barrett is a sales trainer and host of The Business of Family and Selling, a podcast that unpacks sales leadership best practices family-first sellers can leverage to develop their sales talent and grow revenues while maintaining a healthy balance of work and family life.
The Notes
Brendan is also a podcaster and he discusses where the idea for his podcast, The Business of Family & Selling, came from. His podcast was inspired by an audiobook that was written for couples. He realized how neat it was that this author produced a product that is meant to be bought in bulk – by couples and possibly even gifting to other couples. He decided he wanted to create a book like that, but felt under-qualified to write a book on relationships/family. Starting a Podcast served as a way to do the research for writing his book, while he is also building his sales business. The focus of the podcast was on how he could become a better dad, how he could become a better partner to his wife, all while focused on sales. Brendan talks about the path his business has taken and describes a bit of the twists and turns he's encountered building his business.
Let me be honest for a moment – sales is NOT my strong suit… but Brendan is a MASTER. So, in this episode he gives me some impromptu on-air coaching and walks me through some best practices for sales prospecting and follow up. The number one tip he has for business owners is to have a sales process! Be organized, pay attention, and track conversations. We discuss the importance of having a CRM system (which may be as simple as an excel sheet). His second piece of advice is to be persistent when following up with prospects, sometimes touching them 7 or more times. We also talk about Cold Calling and best practices when you hop on the phone with a cold prospect, and how tracking your activity can improve your sales processes.
