Creating email messages can seem very overwhelming. You probably get on some email lists and wonder how in the world they manage to send so many emails. But, what if I told you they do it one email at a time?
You can create a powerful habit, grow engagement, make money with just one email at a time – and I always recommend no less than one email per week (and no more than one per day). The trick is to make some of the emails part of your autoresponder system so that people who sign up new get emails. Other emails should be current so that the customers feel connected to you due to the fresh information you send. If you do just one a week, that’s 52 a year. That can be very powerful for building a relationship with your users and increasing their trust in you as an expert.
It helps to set up a system so that each week you’re creating a different type of email message. Think in terms of evergreen versus current.
Evergreen emails will be relevant for a long time and usually involve promoting a product or service that will mostly always be around. Eventually, that email may have to be deleted or updated. But since they will likely last a while, adding to your autoresponder will work for these emails.
Current emails are emails that are based on the events of today – a sale for today or just this week – or other expiring happenings. If it won’t be good for a few weeks, consider it a current email that you’ll send on broadcast, or to a specific segment of your email list, and not add to your autoresponder. Once you segment your emails into those two types, you can choose to send them out on certain weeks or you can just get up and decide at the spur of the moment. Whatever works best for you. But planning will make it more likely for you to stick to it.
Another way to send emails more frequently is to blog, and set up your autoresponder to send your blog to your audience when they publish – create a new post every week, and you've got your weekly email. Alternatively, if the blog post feels like an evergreen topic, you can hand write a personalized message to your audience pointing to that blog post that will be relevant for ages.
Remember, emails don’t have to be long. A couple hundred words that send your customer to your website, your blog, a product, a service, a cool new idea, a discussion you’re having in your Facebook Group… it all will work great to bring more excitement, engagement, and information to your customers who are on your email list.
Plus, keeping that email list active will make it much more likely that they’ll open the real important sales messages you have lined up. Because by sending regular messages, you train your customer to be receptive to your messages, you build trust with them as you become a resource to them, and you build a great habit that will bring you success as you move forward. After a year or so when you have a few autoresponders in the hopper, you can even take a vacation and no one will be the wiser.
